Since 1851, obituaries in The New York Times have been dominated by white men. With Overlooked, we’re adding the stories of remarkable people whose deaths went unreported in The Times.
By Rebecca Halleck
Every so often our sun emits an invisible burst of energy. This energy ripples through space as electromagnetic waves and then crashes into planets and meteors and space debris and one another, causing a great cacophony above and around us.
A cacophony that was inaudible, until Ruby Payne-Scott entered a laboratory.
In the 1940s, Payne-Scott helped lay the foundation for a new field of science called radio astronomy. Her work led to the discovery of deep-space phenomena like black holes and pulsars and later helped astronauts understand how solar storms disrupt weather in space and electrical grids on Earth.
Yet as a married woman she was denied equal employment status and compensation. She challenged the scientific establishment in her native Australia and fought for the rights of women in the workplace, but ultimately left science to raise her children full time.
World War II opened the door to Payne-Scott’s scientific career. The Australian armed forces needed physicists, and men were joining the military to fight instead.[…]

Cypress tree avenue towards KPH. Photo by Frank Schulenburg via Wikimedia Commons
(Source: Atlas Obscura via Eric McFadden)
One of the most stunning sights of the Bay Area is the historic KPH Radio Station, also known as Marine Coast Station KPH. To reach the station, you must first pass through a clerestory tunnel of cypress trees near the Point Reyes National Seashore.[…]
KPH began providing Morse Code telegram service to ships at sea in the early 20th century, broadcasting from the Palace Hotel in San Francisco (where the station gets its PH call sign). The 1906 earthquake forced the station to move until it was eventually acquired by the Radio Corporation of America (RCA) and found its home in Marin County. The Receiving Station is a classic white Art Deco structure built in 1920. The transmitters themselves, in nearby Bolinas, are a similar style.
At the time, there were dozens of stations like KPH around the United States, though KPH was one of the biggest, sometimes referred to as “the wireless giant of the Pacific.†When the station fell into disuse, land contractors were set to demolish it, including its antennas, to build condominiums. But Globe Wireless acquired the site in 1997 and it was left untouched.[…]

A balcony is your friend, if you have one. Otherwise, we need to use other antenna tactics!
Many thanks to SWLing Post contributor, Tim, who writes:
I am a regular subscriber here, but until now have not formally commented. I’ve been an avid SWL since 1977.
I am intrigued by your in-depth article on understanding and setting up SDR’s. But, what about an antenna? How well will these radios work for someone who is an apartment dweller?
I live here in South Florida and am unable to erect anything outdoors. I do get pretty good reception on my Grundig Satellit 800 and Tecsun PL-880. For these, I use either an indoor slinky antenna I bought on E-Bay; or an active indoor tunable loop antenna. This is one of the models past reviewed by you. It is Australian made, and covers 6–18 MHz. Please comment if you can on antenna usage.
Thank You very much!
First of all, I’m glad you enjoy the SWLing Post, Tim!
Great question: no doubt you understand that the antenna is the most important part of your radio equation!
It sounds like you’re currently using a slinky antenna and a portable PK Loop HF antenna.
The PK Loop
You’re on the right track with a PK Loop if you live in an apartment and have no way of putting an antenna outdoors. Being a small magnetic loop antenna, the PK Loop should help mitigate a bit of the noise in your apartment building.
What I love about the PK Loop is it’s small enough that you can re-position and rotate it to tweak noise rejection and find the quietest spot in your listening room. When I travel by car and even by air, the PK Loop is a welcome companion.
Before we talk about investing in a better indoor antenna, let’s make sure we cover a more affordable option first…
External wire antennas
If you have operable windows in your apartment, even fishing a thin-gauged wire out of your window–allowing it to simply hang along the outtside of the building–could improve your reception significantlyy. Of course, if there’s a source of noise outside of your apartment it might only make things worse, but this is at least an inexpensive experiment and the results might impress you.
I actually tested this theory once and published the following results in a previous post about the PK Loop:
I had a fantastic opportunity to evaluate how well the PK Loop would perform in a typical hotel room. My buddies Eric (WD8RIF), Miles (KD8KNC) and I stayed overnight in a hotel on Wright-Patterson Air Force Base during our mini National Parks On The Air DXpedition.
The hotel room was indeed dense with RFI.
We hooked my Electraft KX2 to both the PK Loop and to a simple random wire antenna.
Without a doubt, the PK Loop was much better at mitigating radio noise than the wire antenna we hung on the inside of the hotel window.
Unlike most modern hotels, however, this one actually had operable windows, so we tossed the random wire out the window and made another comparison. In this case, the external wire antenna consistently outperformed the PK Loop, no doubt because it had the advantage of being outside the radio noise cloud within the hotel’s walls. It goes to show that outdoor antennas–even if simply hanging from a room windowâ–will almost always outperform comparable indoor antennas.
So, if you have a way to dangle a wire out one of your window, give this a try.
How long should the wire be? I suppose it depends on how much vertical space you have below your window. For starters, I’d try to suspend at least eight feet of wire outside. If I had the vertical space, I’d try as much as 31 feet.
Important: First you must check to make sure your wire couldn’t possibly touch electrical lines. Never lower a wire outdoors if the wind could blow it into an electric service entry point, power line or any other type of line or cable. You should do a thorough inspection of the site first.
With that said, keep in mind: Stealth is key!
Can you spot the wire antenna in this photo? Of course not.
Use a thin wire with a black or dark jacket/insulation. Only lower it when using it–don’t leave it out all day long. Check to make sure your antenna isn’t going to interfere with your neighbors below (like landing in their outdoor grill or flower pots!). One strong complaint from neighbors could shut down your operation permanently.
Now back to loops…
If you don’t have operable windows or a way to deploy a wire antenna outside–or you’ve tried a wire antenna and results werre unsatisfactory–then you will be forced to stick with indoor antennnas which almost always leads you down the path of larger amplified wideband magnetic loop antennas.
This is a topic I covered extensively earlier this year.
Please read the post: Indoor shortwave antenna options to pair with a new SDR.
Keep in mind that if you’re fortunate enough to have a balcony, this is where you should mount your loop antenna. Check out this post by SWLing Post contributor, Klaus Boecker.
Klaus Boecker’s homebrew magnetic loop antenna.
Note that there are a number of sub $100 indoor amplified antennas on the market, but I would avoid using them–click here to read my thoughts about these.
In addition, read through this post which includes practical low-to-no-cost tips and best practices for shortwave listening at home and on the go.
Frugal SWLing: Investing little, but getting a lot out of your radio
I’m plotting to write a more in-depth article about antennas in the coming months, but it will focus on external antennas and methods of mounting them. When you have no means of mounting an antenna outdoors, in my opinion, your best options are the ones mentioned above.
Post readers: Have I overlooked an indoor antenna option? Please comment if you have experience with indoor antennas!

Radio’s human touch is the secret to its continued success — but could AI help stations compete?
Automation, audio streaming, smartspeakers, podcasting, audio search and other technological advancements are of increasing importance to radio, offering as many benefits as they do challenges for modern broadcasters.
As belts tighten and consolidation forces radio stations to seek out new efficiencies and revenue streams, artificial intelligence can be used as a tool for sales and digital teams and programmers.
SMARTSPEAKERS, ASSISTANTS, STREAMING, APPS & MORE
Thanks to advances in machine learning and artificial intelligence, many consumers are more likely to ask their smartphone a question than go to customer service. Fast food restaurants, airports and department stores have all adopted kiosks that can help consumers independently perform tasks that previously required employee assistance.
These AI applications have made human interaction increasingly rare, but Jacobs Media President Fred Jacobs points out that people still crave contact that feels human rather than robotic. (Hence the humanoid names and natural-ish voices adopted by Amazon, Apple, Google and other companies’ virtual assistants.)
On his blog, Jacobs writes, “It’s almost ironic then that at a time when technologists are trying to make their robots and gadgets more human, radio often tries to make its humans more robotic. Voicetracking, syndicated shows, liner cards, and other tactics designed to be ratings-friendly may be precisely what listeners aren’t looking for when they turn on the radio.â€
Of course, not all broadcasters would accept that premise.
iHeartMedia, for example, says it’s using AI to improve its iHeartRadio app and “to create an unmatched digital listening experience for our users,†Chief Product Officer Chris Williams told Radio World in August. Using Super Hi-Fi, he says the company is able to offer customized song transitions and adjust volume discrepancies just like a live DJ would — but at the scalable rate necessary for streaming.
According to Williams, “There are two parts of programming that affect the user experience and have to be considered, curation and presentation. The curation, or song selection, is still based on our custom algorithm, which is influenced by the curation expertise of our world-class radio programmers. The presentation, or how the songs are stitched together, is what’s being enhanced using the Super Hi-Fi AI.â€
IT’S NOT ALL BAD NEWS
Even as many DJs fret about automation, syndication and voicetracking putting them out of work, AI saved the job of at least one veteran broadcaster.
In 2016, Cox Media Group national politics reporter James Dupree lost his voice due to tongue protrusion dystonia, but Scottish tech company CereProc has helped get him back on the air, according to a BBC News story written by Mary-Ann Russon.
According to Russon’s article, CereProc started developing neural networks in 2006, and this year has trained one to recreate Dupree’s voice using artificial intelligence that learned from 30 years’ worth of recorded broadcast audio.
CereProc Chief Technical Officer and co-founder Chris Pidcock told the BBC, “AI techniques work quite well on small constrained problems, and learning to model speech is something deep neural nets can do really well.â€
Beginning in late June, Dupree uses free text-to-speech software Balabolka to turn his radio scripts into an audio recording that replicates his voice and can be used on air.
CAN AI MAKE MONEY FOR RADIO STATIONS?
On the advertising side, artificial intelligence certainly offers opportunity for broadcasters.
Veritone Media Senior Vice President Drew Hilles says AI is ideal for tasks like monitoring media, transcription and ad verification, as well as jobs like generating reference clips.
“New realities for traditional media may initially cause concern, but revenue generated from radio advertising is not dying. Broadcasters can preserve and enhance their value proposition for advertisers by employing cognitive engine technology. With the use of AI, the once-linear data of audio and video commercials can be efficiently tracked and analyzed, including native content. As a result, broadcasters can not only prove the brand mentions, but also track the value they deliver to their advertisers,†Hilles explained.
Additional opportunities for monetization may be found in the world of smartspeakers (think ads that direct listeners to take action — and then consumers can immediately and seamlessly do so via voice command!).
This list of artificial intelligence applications for radio is far from exhaustive; most of AI’s potential has yet to be discovered, let alone exploited.

Man had said he was upset over net neutrality reg rollback
FCC chair Ajit Pai thanked law enforcement Tuesday for its work in securing a guilty plea from a man who threatened his family.
“I would like to thank the U.S. Department of Justice, the FBI, local law enforcement, and FCC security officials for their hard work protecting my family and me,†Pai said in a statement. “I am deeply grateful for all they have done to keep us safe.â€

Saying he was angry over the rollback of net neutrality rules, Markara Man plead guilty Aug. 31 in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia, according to the chairman’s office.
Man, 33, of Norwalk, Calif., allegedly sent three emails to Pai Dec. 19 and 20, 2017, the first claiming a child had committed suicide because of the repeal, the second threatening to kill Pai’s family members, and the third including an image of Pai with a framed photo of his family.
Federal agents tracked the emails and confronted Man, who admitting to writing the emails because he wanted to “scare†Pai.
The FCC voted on Dec. 14, 2017, to eliminate the rules against blocking, throttling and paid prioritization following a contentious run-up to the vote in which Pai was savaged and harassed and threatened by a fringe element in the net neutrality activist community.
The FCC chairman was the subject of racist comments, death threats and other invective from online trolls, and was even accused of choking, strangling and killing the open internet by more mainstream activist groups and passionate Hill Democrats, some of whom also branded Pai and fellow Republicans’ actions “un-American.â€
There were also protests outside Pai’s house, including ones targeting his children, during the run-up to the Dec. 14 vote, where a bomb threat briefly cleared the FCC meeting room.

Provides an extra six months for TV’s, radios, to restore service
The FCC says it won’t cancel the licenses of TV and radio stations in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands that have not been able to get back on the air after the devastation of hurricane’s Irma and Maria.
“[T]he communications infrastructures of both Puerto Rico and the USVI were almost completely destroyed,†the FCC said in a recent report about the impact on communications of the 2017 hurricane season.
[Read: Hurricane Maria — Stories From the Frontlinne]
Ordinarily, broadcast licenses expire if a station has been off the air for a consecutive 12-month period, but with the one-year anniversary of the storms approaching, the FCC’s media bureau says it will give licensees another six months to recover, though any station that expects to be off the air more than a year has to file for a special temporary authority (STA) detailing the factors preventing their resumption of broadcasts.
“We believe that the catastrophic nature of these events and the ongoing recovery in Puerto Rico and the U.S.â€
Virgin Islands warrants consideration of ‘equity and fairness’ for those licensees that have been unable to resume station operations because of the damage caused by the hurricanes and the unusual extended recovery period, exacerbated by the difficulty in restoring electrical service to the islands,†said the Media Bureau.
“The FCC made it clear it would extend or reinstate expired licenses unless they get those STA requests.â€
The FCC says that the two hurricanes combined have prompted more than 100 STA requests already.
Back in January, the FCC said it would allow 20 TV stations affected by Hurricanes Irma and Maria to build their post-incentive auction facilitates on an accelerated schedule.
Most of a thousand stations are repacking into new channels per a predetermined and complicated schedule, but the FCC has decided to let those 20 move more quickly to those new channels than had been the plan so they don’t rebuild on the old channel only to have to move to a new in a year or so. The stations had asked for the change and it was granted by the Incentive Auction Task Force and Media Bureau.
