When radio imaging company Capital of Media moved into a new two-studio premises near Hilversum, there was only one choice of monitors for the new rooms, and that was PMC.

“I fell in love with PMC monitors about 10 years ago because they deliver such a great, honest sound,” says company owner Anthony Timmers. “Back then, out studio was a lot smaller and we had PMC DB1S speakers because these suited the size of the room. However, when we moved to our new premises, Pinna Acoustics designed and built a large main studio with a vocal booth and a smaller second studio. Our old DB1S system was fine for the smaller room but we needed bigger monitors for the main studio, so together with Jules Fransen and Raf Lenssens from PMC’s Benelux distributor Joystick, we conducted a few listening sessions with several different PMC models. The result was conclusive — PMC MB2S were thee right monitors for us.”

As Capital of Media’s composers and engineers tend to work ‘In the Box’, its studios are equipped with Pro Tools HD and Logic Pro, plus an extensive selection of plug ins. Crane Song Avocet IIA is used for monitoring and volume control and there is also a Focusrite Liquid Channel as microphone preamp/compressor. Voice over artists and vocalists using the new vocal booth have access to a Powerplay16 P16-M mixer so they can create their own mix on their headphones.

“We use PMCs during the entire production process,” Timmers says. “The sound they give you is the real deal. You’ll hear everything, so mixing is very quick and easy, which is a must in our business where speed of turnaround is important. Our PMC speakers allow us to make correct decisions for our clients — they really are awesomee. I’d say to anyone thinking about new speakers, try PMC because you and your clients will be impressed.”

Timmers adds that he is also delighted with the service he received from Joystick, a company he describes as ‘maximum helpful’.

“If there’s one company you want to have on your team to create or update your new studio, it’s Joystick,” he says. “They don’t wear slick suits or have expensive cars parked outside. Instead they are just like us — audio nerds who know exacctly what they are talking about and are very good at helping their customers come to the right decisions about equipment.”

Now based in Nijkerk, Capital of Media was founded by Timmers in 2001 when he noticed a gap in the market for radio imaging services.

“I was working as Imaging Director at Radio 538, Holland’s №1 hit radio station,” he explains. “Because of the work I did, people began asking me to create audio for their companies, too. What began as a side project that provided a little extra money eventually became Capital of Media. Today we work for major radio and television companies all over the world and employ a team of six people, which is something I am very proud of.”

Radio Imaging involves creating audio that links a programme together. Radio and TV clients rely on Capital of Media to compose custom music for jingles and leaders across a range of styles and genres. Recent projects include creating a ‘classic’ pack featuring the sound of The Carpenters and Michael McDonald for Dutch public station NPO Radio 5. Another project, for Paradise FM on Curacao, utilised modern contemporary sounds in line with today’s pop music.

“We also tackle seasonal projects that involve using sunny music tracks for special summer jingles or Christmas sound in the television idents for one of Holland’s leading TV-stations, SBS6,” Timmers adds.

Prism Sound has announced an upgrade to its popular SADiE 6.1 software to introduce a number of enhancements and bug fixes that make the SADiE user experience even more seamless and enjoyable.

The launch of SADiE V6.1.13 software marks another step in the evolution of this high-quality audio recording and production system that allows a choice between proprietary audio I/O and DSP processing, or standard soundcard I/O and DSP functions running on the host computer.

Available as a 64-bit version of SADiE 6 for native operation and also for the SADiE BB2 Radio Editor system and LRX2 Flexible Location Recorder, SADiE V6.1.13 delivers an update to the system’s core so that they are fully compatible with Window 10.

“The new software adds a number of advantages in terms of expanded functionality and much improved latency figures, especially when SADiE systems are running in ASIO mode,” says SADiE Product Specialist Steve Penn. “With this version, both fully featured SADiE 6 software and SADiE’s simple intuitive MTR standalone recording software can support 254 channels In and Out over ASIO. We have also ensured that Sound Suite versions of SADiE 6 can support ASIO Direct Monitoring when used with ASIO devices that have this facility, such as Prism Sound’s award-wining Titan, Lyra and Atlas audio interfaces, RME units and cards with Total mix.”

The Mastering Suite and Sound Suite versions of SADiE V6.1.13 also offer WAV Master, ASIO Direct Monitoring and native support for timecode. ASIO Direct Monitoring is available in the Sound Suite version, while native LTC support is offered in the Mastering, Post and Sound Suite versions.

Other smaller feature updates include support for playback and recording to RF64 format and 64bit support for the Cedar Retouch, Declick, Decrackle, Dethump plug-ins.

The new software is available as a free download to any existing SADiE 6 users from the Prism Sound/SADiE website. For access, please follow this link: http://www.sadie.com

AMSTERDAM, THE NETHERLANDS (STAND #8.D47) / CLEVELAND, OH — 30 August 2018
The Telos Alliance®—leader in broadcast technology and parent company to Telos®, Omnia®, Axia®, 25-Seven®, Linear Acoustic®, and Minnetonka

— announced that it will be partiicipating in the IP Showcase at IBC 2018, where it will demonstrate AES67 interoperability using the Axia RAQ AoIP Console, Axia QOR.32 Integrated Console Engine, and Telos Alliance xNode Audio Interfaces.

“Seeing is believing! With gear from 50 manufacturers interconnected with AES67, broadcasters and creators of media content can see how AoIP is ready for daily use in their facilities. Come see that AoIP interoperability is not a science experiment. It is real and practical to implement today,” says Marty Sacks, VP of Sales, Support, and Marketing for the Telos Alliance.

The IP Showcase has been a feature at major industry trade shows since IBC 2016 and has been instrumental in helping the industry to galvanize behind the standards-based approach to IP. The event is hosted by major technical and standards organizations within the broadcast industry — Audio Engineering Society (AES), Alliance for IP Media Solutions (AIMS), Advanced Media Workflow Association (AMWA), European Broadcasting Union (EBU), Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers® (SMPTE®), and Video Services Forum (VSF).

Industry-leading vendors like the Telos Alliance and broadcasters will gather at the IP Showcase at IBC 2018 to provide instructional and case-study presentations and an array of IP-based product demonstrations highlighting the benefits of, and momentum behind, the broadcast industry’s move to standards-based IP infrastructure for real-time professional media applications. The IP Showcase will feature equipment displays and product demonstrations that emphasize everything industry vendors have achieved in support of IP standards and specifications. Meanwhile, the IP Showcase Theatre will be the destination for educational presentations, a vital element as the industry progresses through the phases of IP adoption.

“The transition to IP is underway, and the progress we’ve made toward standardizing IP infrastructure and operations in the media industry has only happened because so many organizations have come together and devoted time and effort to the cause,” says Michael Cronk, AIMS board chair. “The IP Showcase is a physical manifestation of that progress, and we’re thrilled to see all the companies that have embraced IP technology and chosen to put their efforts on show for IBC visitors to experience.”

The IP Showcase will take place in rooms E106 and E107 at the RAI Amsterdam during IBC 2018, Sept. 14–18. More information about the IP Showcase at IBC 2018 is available at www.ipshowcase.org.

Many thanks to SWLing Post contributor, Diego Collado who writes:

My name is Diego Collado and I’m an 18 year old student from Barcelona,
Spain. First of all, thank you very much for your website. It is a great
place for getting to know the amazing yet sometimes mysterious world of
shortwave listening. It has also been particularly useful when having to
choose a radio for shortwave and mediumwave reception.

I’ve been an SWLer myself for a while now, but I’ve decided to actually
start my own show on Channel 292, rebroadcasting the radio programme I
do monthly at the local radio station in my neighborhood. It is called
“
Centauros del Desierto“, broadcasting under the “Radio Collado” name
every first Saturday of the month at 19:00UTC on 6070 (Channel 292).
There is also a repetition of the show the Saturday after that at the
same hour, although this is prone to change if there is a conflict in
the schedule. I guess Channel 292 will warn if there is a schedule change.

Here is the show’s website: http://centauros.net

Excellent, Diego! We will all look forward to listening to Centauros del Desierto on Channel 292, first Saturday of the month at 19:00UTC on 6070 kHz! Indeed, I’ll listen for you this Saturday (September 1).

The NRAO’s Very Large Array (VLA) in New Mexico is 40 years old.

(Source: WIRED)

IN THE EARLY 1930s, Bell Labs was experimenting with making wireless transatlantic calls. The communications goliath wanted to understand the static that might crackle across the ocean, so it asked an engineer named Karl Jansky to investigate its sources. He found three: nearby thunderstorms, distant thunderstorms, and a steady hiss, coming from … somewhere.

Jansky studied the hiss for a year, using a rudimentary antenna that looked like toppled scaffolding, before announcing its origin: The static was coming from the the galaxy itself. “Radio waves heard from remote space,” announced The New York Times in May 1933. “Sound like steam from a radiator after traveling 30,000 light-years.” Janksy had unwittingly spawned the field of radio astronomy.

Today, a replica of Jansky’s scope sits on the lawn in front of Green Bank Observatory, one of the four world-class public radio telescopes in the US. Along with the Very Large Array, Arecibo Observatory, and the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA), it is the legacy of a boom time in federal investment in the field that began in earnest after World War II.

In the past several years, though, the National Science Foundation has backed away from three of those instruments. In 2012 the NSF published a review recommending that the foundation ramp down funding to Green Bank—just 11 years after it was finished — as well as the VLBA, which ccan resolve a penny from about 960 miles away. Three years later, the foundation asked Arecibo for management proposals that “involve a substantially reduced funding commitment from NSF.”

[S]upport for pure science in the US is always complicated, since it relies on the good graces of federal agencies and annual budgets. As funders balance building and operating new scopes with the old, while giving grants to the astronomers who actually use those instruments, something’s gotta give. And no matter what it is, the science will not be the same.

[…]THERE IS A new facility potentially on the horizon: The Next — Generation VLA (the VLA itself, while upgraded, is 40 years old). As currently envisioned, the ngVLA’s many antennas will together have 10 times the sensitivity and resolution as the VLA, at a wider range of frequencies. The primary array will have 214 18-meter antennas, spiraled across New Mexico, Texas, Arizona, and Mexico. Nineteen smaller ones will sit close to the center, and 30 18-meterers will constellate the continent.[…]<

The 74 delegates to the Youngsters of the Air (YOTA) South Africa 2018 gathering held in early August in South Africa enjoyed what one participant called “a mind-blowing experience.” As the event drew to a close, the event’s patron, Gary Immelman, ZS6YI, reminded the participants that they are Amateur Radio’s future leaders and urged them to become leaders in their respective organizations at home. Campers at YOTA South Africa 2018, which was sponsored by the South African Radio League (SARL), represented 23 countries in Europe and Africa, and the US.

“By virtue of the fact that you were prepared to come all this way to South Africa and to so enthusiastically participate in this year’s YOTA tells me that you are a very dedicated and motivated group of young people,” Immelman said. “The enthusiasm and vigor in which you participated in the various activities gives me comfort that the future of Amateur Radio is indeed very bright.”

Thirteen-year-old Faith Hannah Lea, AE4FH, of Palm Coast, Florida, was the sole International Amateur Radio Union Region 2 (IARU R2) representative at the YOTA gathering. Licensed at age 10 and now holding an Amateur Extra-class license, Faith Hannah is very active on the airwaves and in promoting Amateur Radio via YouTube and elsewhere. Her dad, James Lea, WX4TV, accompanied his daughter to YOTA South Africa 2018.

“Train the trainer” was an overarching theme of YOTA South Africa 2018. At several sessions during the weeklong gathering, teams presented ideas on how to leverage their camp experience to help attract other young people to Amateur Radio in their home countries.

The young radio amateurs built QRP Labs transceiver kits and kept special event station ZS9YOTA active on SSB, CW, and FT8.

Some 20 young camp participants made their first satellite contacts. The group had launched a balloon carrying Amateur Radio (BACAR) — a hiigh-altitude balloon with radio equipment on board to explore near space. While waiting for the data to return, the YOTA group operated from grid KG43 on multiple satellites, including SO-50, AO-91, and AO-92.

A summertime gathering in the past, YOTA South Africa 2018 took place during winter in the Southern Hemisphere in South Africa’s Gauteng region.

Immelman said the intent of YOTA South Africa 2018 was to expose participants to relatively “high-intensity Amateur Radio fun” within a diverse environment. “I believe you have all got a taste of what could be done in our hobby and especially what can be built upon to make YOTA of the future an ever-changing and even better experience than the last,” he added.

Immelman thanked SARL President Nico van Rensburg, ZS6QL; SARL Youth Coordinator Koos Fick, ZR6KF, and IARU Youth Working Group Chair Lisa Leenders, PA2LS, for their roles in bringing the event to South Africa. So far, no one has applied to host the 2019 YOTA event. — Thanks to SARL. SSome information from AMSAT News Service.

ARRL Headquarters will be closed on Monday, September 3, for the Labor Day holiday. There will be no W1AW bulletin or code practice transmissions that day. ARRL Headquarters will reopen on Tuesday, September 4, at 1200 UTC. Have a safe and enjoyable Labor Day weekend!

Howard E. Michel, WB2ITX, is New ARRL Chief Executive Officer

The ARRL Board of Directors has elected Howard E. Michel, WB2ITX, of Dartmouth, Massachusetts, to be ARRL’s new Chief Executive Officer. He will start on October 15. Michel (rhymes with “nickel”) is currently Chief Technology Officer at UBTECH Education, and Senior Vice President of UBTECH Robotics, a $5 billion Shenzhen, China, artificial intelligence and robotics company. As the Chief Technology Officer at UBTECH Education, Michel helped build this company from a startup in China to $100 million in valuation.

“I have Amateur Radio to thank for starting me on a very successful career, and I’m excited about the opportunity to further ARRL’s goals as CEO. Leading the League will allow me to ‘give back’ to a great community and provide a similar opportunity for future generations,” Michel said. “I have been a licensed ham for 50 years, and I’ve seen many changes in the hobby. One of my top priorities as CEO will be to develop new products and services so all hams, whatever their license class or interest, find value in League membership,” he added.

Michel was first licensed as WN2ITX when he was about 16 and upgraded to General and Advanced within a year. He earned his Amateur Extra-class license in 2000. “I’ve operated CW/AM/FM/SSB/digital on 80/40/20/15/10/2, on equipment that I have either built, repaired, or modified,” he said.

ARRL President Rick Roderick, K5UR, said, “We are excited to have someone of Howard’s qualifications to lead this organization. Howard’s management experience, along with his experience at leading a membership-driven association, makes him an ideal person to move this organization forward.”

In 2015, Michel served as president and CEO of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), a volunteer position.

“In any large membership-led organization such as ARRL, its members and volunteers are its greatest asset, and a good staff-volunteer relationship is crucial to its success,” Michel said. “I intend to build on this relationship and multiply and amplify the efforts of both staff and volunteers in furthering ARRL’s goals to advance the art, science, and enjoyment of Amateur Radio.”

Michel is a retired US Air Force officer, having served as a pilot, satellite launch director, engineer, and engineering manager. During his time in the military, wherever he could set up an antenna, he took the opportunity to operate.

Michel earned his bachelor’s degree in electronic engineering from New Jersey Institute of Technology, a master’s degree in electronic and computer engineering from the University of Massachusetts, and a master’s degree in systems management from the University of Southern California. He holds a PhD in computer science and engineering from Wright State

Similar to the AO-7 satellite resurrection several years ago, the Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) packet radio system on the International Space Station (ISS) has begun working again. NASA ISS Ham Radio Project Engineer Kenneth Ransom, N5VHO, said over the weekend that reports he’d received indicated that the NA1SS packet signal returned in mid-August.

“It appears it indeed has started working as of about 11 days ago,” Ransom said. “No idea how long it will last, given the degrading state of the current hardware. The longer it lasts, the better.” Ransom said the revived system will fill the gap until a replacement packet module goes up later this year on a Progress supply vehicle and is installed by the crew on a time-available basis. Satellite enthusiast Patrick Stoddard, WD9EWK, in Arizona reported via the ISS Fan Club site that the ISS packet system was operating on August 25 at 1915 UTC during an 8° pass over the continental US. “I got my position packet through once, no QSOs this pass,” he said in a post.

The packet signal on 145.825 MHz has been copied in Europe, South America, India, and elsewhere. In another August 25 post, Mark Pisani, KK6OTJ, reported copying the packet system during an 18° pass over southern California and said he worked KB6LTY through the system. “Heard over Patagonia Argentina!” Francisco Rodriguez, LU2WBA, enthused in a post on August 24 at 2323 UTC. “Welcome back!” An August 17 post from Marco Antonio, PU2MUS, in Brazil indicated that the system was not active at that time.

Earlier this summer, ARISS hardware team members on the ground reported that they were able to locate a functional duplicate of the ISS packet module that had been in use on the ISS for 17 years before it failed more than a year ago. The packet module has been manifest on the Progress 71P spacecraft launch now set for October 31, with docking on November 2.

ARISS said the subsequent installation will depend on the crew’s busy schedule, but expressed hope that the new packet system hardware could be online again by the end of November.
