Self-proclaimed “underdog” of the rap industry, American rapper Logic finds himself at the top of the Billboard Top 100 for his new song, “1–800–273–8255”.

Logic

“1–800–272–8255” is a song that highlights the overshadowed problem of mental health, and raises the question of why mental health isn’t covered in mainstream media. Logic explained his reasoning behind the song saying he “felt compelled to make a song that could actually” help his fans “who are in a dark place and can’t seem to find the light.” Logic used his ability to use his voice and speak to the world not only for his personal gain, but to let sufferers of mental health disorders know that they’re not alone, and that there’s hope. Logic chose the suicide prevention hotline as a fitting title for his song, and in doing so raised the calls to the hotline over 30%.

Logic begins the chorus as the individual calling the hotline, stating “I don’t wanna be alive, I just wanna die today, and let me tell you why”. Second chorus starts him as the respondent, saying “I want you to be alive”. The song ends with Khalid, one of the featured artists of the song, singing hopefully and joyously that he doesn’t want to die or cry anymore. I personally feel that the song’s intensity is absolutely necessary to carry the message across, and that this was an amazing example of how musicians and artists such as Logic can use their voice to promote positive change within society.
