A Fig Tree in Solomon’s Garden (poem)
Sep 16, 2022
The perfect fig
has half a drop
of nectar
glowing out the end,
she said.
Picking figs requires patience.
Look for the drop of nectar
the dusky purple
sun-kissed
swollen flower full of juice
Waiting
to be bitten.
Harvest greedily
and you’ll get a handful of
sticky white sap.
In this garden
thrives a fig tree
planted some 30? 40? 50?
years ago
like me
There is enough fruit to share
with birds, and squirrels,
and you.
Grasp firmly, beloved
Embrace these inflamed blossoms
turned inwards
to produce the fruit
of paradise.
