“What did it say?
I pounded on Alex’s door, feeling the panic rise in me. I began to take in deep breaths, hoping that would help, but I still couldn’t catch my breath. I knocked again, wondering what in the world was taking my sister so long to answer? Finally I could hear her opening the door.
Not wasting a moment on hello’s, I took the crumpled paper from my pocket tossing it at her as if it were a hot potato. “Alex, I’m freaking out, read that!” I pushed past her, collapsing on her couch, holding my heart, willing it to slow down, but not making any progress.
Alex unrumpled the note, glanced at it, then looked back at me. “Okay, I see it, and?”
I looked at her as if she sprouted another head right before my eyes. ”Alex, I’m in no mood for you to fool around. My nerves are shot. Don’t act like you can’t read the writing!” I screeched out.
Alex started to giggle, covering her mouth with her hand. “Oops, sorry. I didn’t have my glasses on, calm down. Let me read it again.” Alex looked at the note, carefully this time, adjusting her bifocals. “Oh my gosh, it says, ‘I’m going to get you KD, your time has come!’ That’s crazy. Where did you find that?”
“I nearly died when I spotted it nailed to a tree Krieger and I pass everyday. I think it’s written in blood. ” Once again I tried to steady my breath, I began to feel lightheaded and my knees began to feel weak.
“Okay, calm down KD, it’s not a big deal.” Alex said in a soothing tone.
I began pacing, a habit I’ve done since I was a kid. It was something I did to try to calm myself. At this point all I was going to do was run tracks all the way to China before I’d ever see my day of Zen. I suddenly realized throughout all of this my larger than life sister was completely calm, almost too calm…
“How can you stand there so calm when I just showed you my death warrant!”
Alex started to giggle again.
“I really don’t see what’s so amusing? Alex, what’s wrong with you?”
“Okay, fine, promise you won’t be mad?”
I let out a long steady breath. “Speak.”
“Promise you won’t kill me?”
“Alex, we’re Catholic, it’s against our religion, besides, I can’t go to jail, I’m a picky eater. Spill the beans before I tackle you and make you tell me!”
“Well, I thought it would be funny to play a little joke on you.”
“So help me God, if you’re going to tell me you had something to do with this, I swear on all that’s holy, I’m going to kill you!”
Alex let out a gasp. “But you just said you wouldn’t kill me!”
“You deserved it! You switched my salt with sugar! All’s fair in love and war.”
“Holy cow, that was weeks ago!”
“I know, I’m patient. I waited until you got good and comfortable. Are you comfortable?”
“No, not really. But, just know, you won’t be either when I get back at you. Know that I don’t get even, I get ahead. How did you manage this anyway?”
“It was a piece of cake. I painted the words, ‘I’m going to get you KD, your time has come’ in red nail polish, on a note, then when you were out, I snuck over and put it up. Voila.”
I was impressed by her little stunt, she really did pull one over on me. I couldn’t help the smile that began to form on my face, we do have fun together. But it would be even more fun getting back at her, my mind was already busy plotting…
