Poverty destroys an individual’s self-esteem and sense of self-worth. It destroys the family unit. It makes people dependent on government or charitable organizations for their subsistence. The United States has been fighting a war on poverty for 53 years. It is losing that war. It is time for the government to rethink its methods for fighting poverty. No market economy can withstand citizens being unable to fully participate in the market exchange. It hinders economic and personal growth.
