My heart raced with excitement and anticipation when I heard about my surprise birthday trip. I kept guessing the destination and was cheering with joy upon every wrong guess. Little did I know that Pisa, with its iconic Leaning Tower and rich history, would be the highlight of my special day.

As the train from Florence pulled into Pisa, I couldn’t help but feel a flutter of excitement. We had to rush towards Airbnb to freshen up and recharge ourselves as the heat waves in July showed no mercy. It was a 30-minute walk from Airbnb to Leaning Tower, we were crazy to opt for this option on mid-day. It felt like a short walk, as we were mesmerized by the beauty of the city.

Stepping into Piazza dei Miracoli, I was immediately drawn to the Leaning Tower, its famous tilt more pronounced in person than any photograph could capture. I craned my neck to take in its full height, and Climbed an 8-floored narrow, spiral, slippery staircase to the top, I felt a mix of exhilaration and wonder. The panoramic view of Pisa from above, with its red-tiled roofs and the Arno River snaking through, was a reward worth the effort.

Adjacent to the Leaning Tower, the Pisa Cathedral (Duomo) stood as a testament to the city’s rich religious heritage. Its striking marble façade, adorned with intricate carvings and sculptures, drew me in. Inside, the grandeur of the cathedral took my breath away. The ornate pulpit, crafted by Giovanni Pisano, and the awe-inspiring frescoes painted a picture of devotion and artistry.

Just a stone’s throw away, the Baptistery, with its unique blend of Romanesque and Gothic architecture, beckoned. I was particularly fascinated by the acoustics within this circular building. As a guide demonstrated the Baptistery’s perfect echo, the notes lingered in the air, creating a hauntingly beautiful symphony.

Leaving the grandeur of Piazza dei Miracoli behind, I ventured into the heart of Pisa’s historic center. The narrow cobblestone streets, lined with charming cafes, gelaterias, and boutique shops, invited leisurely exploration. I savored a scoop of creamy gelato while admiring the elegant facades of medieval buildings.

As the day drew to a close, I headed towards the Arno River. The golden hour bathed the city in a warm, ethereal glow. Walking along the riverbank, I paused to take in the sight of the sun setting behind the distant hills, casting a shimmering reflection on the water. The graceful arches of the Ponte di Mezzo bridge and the colorful buildings lining the river created a picturesque scene that felt like a painting coming to life.

On our way back to Airbnb, we started singing and dancing on the roads with the vibe of the city felt nothing less than a movie scene. Pisa has everything to offer from delightful ambiance, riverbanks, and great monuments, to food.

My day in Pisa was the perfect birthday surprise, filled with unforgettable moments and discoveries. This city, often overshadowed by its famous Leaning Tower, revealed itself to be a treasure trove of history, art, and charm. As I boarded the train towards another beautiful destination place in Italy, Cinque Terre, I left with a sense of fulfillment and a newfound appreciation for Pisa’s many wonders. It was a birthday gift that I would cherish forever.
