Advice for SGAs

A year ago, Funmi Adewodu wrote, How a Hackathon Got Me My Dream Job. She included nuggets for other job seekers which I will paraphrase below.

Full Disclosure

Makers will be replaced by the word SGA to serve the primary audience of this article.

Makers: refers to a coding boot camp where Funmi graduated from Europe.

SGA: refers to Stutern Graduate Accelerator, a design and coding boot camp in Africa.

A self-reflective piece usually comes at the height of success or a terrible low. This story doesn’t fit into either situation. Rather, it’s a reflection born out of a request to share the Stutern story, a company my twin brother and I founded a few years ago.

Dr. Aaron, my pastor during grad school, and someone I deeply respect, recently asked me to share the story of how we started Stutern, as he was looking to start something similar in his home country. I realized I could make my story public, so you too might learn from it.

“I had been out of a job for six months and wasn’t doing much with my time. It was a period of heavy brooding and introspection and I had been taking online courses in different areas of technology in a bid to figure out a befitting career path for myself. I told myself “Why don’t you try it out, you have nothing to lose. If you get into the program, fine, if you don’t, no pressure”. That seemingly random thought inadvertently led me to make the best decision of my career.” — Olayinka, (SGA 0.1 Candidate)

It is a significant fact that far more must be done to equip youths with relevant skills before they can be let into the employment pool. On the 18th & 19th of August 2017, Stutern, Nigeria’s leading internship website that helps employers hire undergraduates and recent graduates as interns and entry level staff, will be hosting the 2nd edition of the annual Nigeria Internship Fair. The fair aims to cater primarily to Nigerian youths and employers.

Nigerian youths make up an alarming 60% of the 180m population. Our tertiary institutions graduate about 2.5 million youths annually and about 40% of…

I spent my Good Friday like every other day. But I know at least someone who joined others to marvel at it because it wasn’t just any day. So I took time to understand what exactly Good Friday is. Below is what I discovered.

In the time of the gospel, back to the known world, Israel was occupied and ruled by the Roman empire. Rome was the occupying force. The empire was a symbol of strength, wealth and power.

Their ruler and lord was Ceaser. He was exalted and even worshipped for his often ruthless intent of extending his empire…

Last night was a yummy treat at Techstars’ Founders Dinner by Ingressive’s Tour of Tech in Lagos, Nigeria. Besides open ears, we quickly had to grow an open mind while dinning with Lotte of NESA by MAKERS Academy Nigeria, Naomi from Aluko & Oyebode, Taiwo my twin from Stutern, and of course Tyler Scriven of Techstars Atlanta.

Tyler is an entrepreneur, early-stage technology investor, advisor, Managing Director and Co-Founder of Techstars Atlanta. Before joining Techstars, he was one of the senior leaders at Palantir Technologies, where he served as Chief of Staff and Head of Operations. …

At the beginning of 2016, I had a number of to-read books, which I hardly read. However, my kindle reading statistics now displays that I’m 18% on one of those books; New York Times Bestseller “Benjamin Franklin,” by Walter Isaacson (Author of Einstein and Steve Jobs)

There was a line in the book that reinforces my life mission. It says, “The riches of a country are to be valued by the quantity of labor its inhabitants are able to purchase, and not by the quantity of silver and gold they possess.” …

Few hours ago, we got a phone call and a twitter mention. Listen up, these were not the normal call nor mention we usually get, these were super excited recently hired interns through the just concluded Nigeria Internship Fair by Stutern (on Oct 1 2016). One of them was hired by Ringier while the other by MAX Delivery Service. We couldn’t be more excited.

Nigeria Internship Fair by Stutern was a significant event that rapidly evolved within 48 days from just an idea to a solution and that was largely backed by 32 employers, 3354 candidates, 12 partners, the…

It is not a surprise seeing Nigerian youths at events that improves or promises to improve their chances of employment. What is however surprising is seeing a mass of youths ready to pay to attend such an event. I mean, it is not a Cinema.

This is just evidence that our youths are seriously in search for a path. WWW.STUTERN.COM has come to lead them.

When we hosted young talents at the Stutern Open Offie Hours, just few days ago, this was precisely on the 30th of April 2016, we had 75% of the total pre-booked attendees present.

Our goal…
