Also, why would the doc prescribe an NSAID if he or she thought the patient had GERD as the etiology for his sore throat? Ibuprofen would potentially exaccerbate the reflux.

As to high costs, I often told patients to get on the phone and call several pharmacies to price shop their Rx before filling it.
