It’s a cliche and it’s false. As you mention above, novelists who find an audience tend to also find an audience for their short fiction. Many novelists are prolific at both. I’m thinking of Stephen King and George R.R. Martin, as you mention above. I’m also thinking of Ursula K. Le Guin, Tom Perrotta and John Updike.
