Frequently Asked Questions during Newborn Photography

Newborn Photography

The first few days of a baby’s life are incredible. Newborns stay ‘new’ for such a short time and I love to capture all the special details of your fresh little one before they change. I have put together some frequently ask questions to you plan your shoot. If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact me.

Are you able to come to our home to photograph our baby?

Yes, definitely! I’m one of the few professional photographers that offers this service. I bring the studio to your home — lights, backdrops, plenty of props, dozens of soft curly blankets and wraps and even extra heaters to ensure your baby is always kept warm.
I’ve had hundreds of compliments from happy parents relived that they haven’t had to leave their home to get studio quality images. Plus having to occupy their 2-year-old child for several hours while their newborn is being photographed at a studio.

When should I book my Newborn Session?

My schedule fills up about 3 weeks in advance so, if possible, please call to schedule your newborn appointment before your baby is born. Since you never really know when your little one will arrive, I will make a tentative booking based on your due date. When your baby is born, and you are back home from hospital I will move your appointment accordingly.

When is the best age to photograph my newborn baby?

The best time to photograph newborns is when they are between 5–12 days of age. At this point they are still very sleepy and like to curl up as if they were still in the womb. Once babies get older, they might get a bit colicky and they will start to move much more which means that they are more likely to be disturbed while sleeping. Capturing your newborn within the first two weeks of life while they are still sleepy and curled up, can make all the difference in your newborn portraits.

If your baby came early or if your baby is already born, don’t panic! I always do my best to squeeze newborns into my schedule and older babies take beautiful portraits too.

What should I organise for my newborn session?

If possible, I recommend trying to keep your baby awake before I arrive and plan to feed while I’m setting up? Sleepy babies photograph beautifully, so to ensure your little one is happy with a full tummy, your session may require multiple breaks for feeding.

Do you provide props?

I sure do. I have a great range of props like nests, baskets and bowls. I also have a huge selection of blankets, wraps, headbands and beanies.

How long will the session take?

Newborn sessions can take 3–4 hours allowing time for soothing, feeding and of course capturing amazing images of your baby.

Do you include siblings and parents in your newborn sessions?

I do! Newborn sessions include parents, siblings and even pets — I love a challenge! I always try to capture great sibling shots, but on the day, it will really depend on what your other children are game for. I kindly ask that you do not set high expectations for your older children at the newborn session, especially for siblings three years old and under.
