Fresh Tacos and More

Friends! A nacho review is long overdue. There aren’t a ton of nacho options in Hanoi, but still plenty I need to try. I’m just lazy and nachos seem so expensive here compared to a bowl of Bun Cha for $1. Mmmmmm. Ok, back to nachos, my first and true love.

GET IN MY BELLY!

Tonight I tried a hole-in-the-wall Mexican place called Fresh Tacos and More. I went with my CELTA buddies, Caroline and Arielle. Sidenote: they also write blogs (click their names)!

Fresh Tacos and More has two locations. We were at the one in Old Quarter which is a convenient location if you’re a tourist. But if you’re a tourist, don’t eat Mexican food. Unless you review nachos around the world for a living, then you can. The restaurant was small but it appeared to have an upstairs. The front door never stayed shut and we were constantly getting up to close it because it was so cold outside! But you don’t really care about that, do you?

Anyway, this place was quiet and had a big menu of Mexican food. I had a decent Pina Colada and some seriously good Horchata. All the food we ordered was alright when you’re craving Mexican goodness, but let’s get to the nachos.

The Verdict:

The nachos were nothing to write home about. First of all, they were pretty small. They only cost about $4.50 so it wasn’t a bad deal, but I always want more nachos. The chips were homemade which usually is a good thing, but I’m not so sure that is the case here. The chips had a fine flavor but were a little soft, like microwaved or something. There were lots of toppings but the salsa was basically tomato sauce and the guacamole was a little bland and too smooth. Sour cream in Vietnam is a little gritty. It’s a weird texture, but still tastes ok. The veggies were probably frozen, which is a shame because such plentiful veggies exist here. I guess maybe not the ones needed for Mexican food, though. The nachos did have some beans and jalapeños though, with a slight kick even. All in all, they weren’t horrible, but there are better spots in Hanoi. So far, I recommend Puku and Moose and Roo for the best nachos.

Official score on a scale of 1 to 10 (1 = Horrible, but better than no nachos at all. 10 = Holy Shit, my life is complete.): 4/10
