Forbes claims that there are five things that will be educational trends in 2019: augmented reality/virtual reality, personalized learning, Internet of Things (IoT), AI and big data, and the rise of online security.
Currently, I use virtual tours in my classes room to tour the Lascaux caves in France and also the Louvre Museum in Paris. I know that other teachers at my old school district used this technology as well. The students love getting to explore something that they will most likely never see in their lifetime.
I am excited about the ramp up of online security, if that is the case in 2019. My school used Lanschool, where teachers were able to view the students’ screens all at one time and block websites that they should not be using during that class period. I made great use of it, the students didn’t always appreciate it, but I felt like it helped my classroom management in many ways. In the article it talked about Securly and being able to receive a weekly report of search history. I don’t use it right now but when my daughter comes of age to search the internet on her own, I might even look into this more. Currently, my husband uses a program kind of like Securly on all of our computers and devices called Covenant Eyes. It sends his search history to an accountability partner and it alerts them if a search looks sketchy. I feel like this has helped our family out a lot. It certainly helps keep things that don’t need in our life out!
The article also talked about the Internet of Things (IoT) and AI and data. I feel like IoT would be really good for core classes, maybe not as effective in my classroom with the time limit of my class (12 weeks), but great for student accountability. One trend I am excited for, and think will be most beneficial, is AI and data collection. I am proved time and time again that the more assessment, the more growth happens in the classroom. Whatever helps make tracking this data more easy and efficient is definitely something to invest some time looking into. If students can see their goal in front of them, it might gear them towards reaching it more.
