After reading your original piece I only needed to read one comment to confirm the sentiment that many have felt.
1) The disjointed flow of the piece doesn’t do justice to your claim of being a teacher of writing.
2) Your piece reads more like a victim rationalizing their abuser, i.e. the Stockholm Syndrome, mentioned in some comment. If you could simply acknowledge that whatever positive you gain from your profession doesn’t justify your lack of humane work conditions then the commentary would be different. Minimum security federal prisoners are probably one rung above adjuncts on the social ladder and yet some strange egotism prevents you from seeing that.
3) In regards to shame culture and privilege checking I don’t think those notions are mutually exclusive. Some people should be afraid of trying. And it’s because they probably don’t have the perspective or experience to succeed in elaborating on ideas or topics they are only minimally familiar with. They are intuitively aware that they lack some knowledge or awareness that will contribute to their success. And what an intelligent person does is they research existing literature and ask questions to people who may have a better awareness than them. It’s a basic concept and the attempt to rationalize that shame culture is somehow responsible here for a fear of failure is ridiculous.
