Queerness, Choice, and Assimilation
Galen Mitchell

I’ve always been a little uncomfortable with the ‘born this way’ argument. It sets up criteria and leads to queer folks feeling unqualified for membership. My ‘not trans enough’ problem is directly related to all the ‘this is not a choice’ rhetoric.

Besides, the morality of any behavior should not be related to its origin. Stealing is bad, even if there’s a biological cause for kleptomania. I’ve yet to hear a good argument for why gay/trans is bad other than it makes some people uncomfortable (usually for unspecified reasons), regardless of whether it’s voluntary.
