A Chance Meeting In Sky Harbor
What I wrote below is FICTION. It is NOT REAL.
INTERIOR: Private jet. Window shades down. A MAN with white hair sits with his back to the camera. Opposite him, US ATTORNEY GENERAL LYNCH.
MAN: “Thank you for seeing me.”
EFFECTS: Lynch is sweating. Looks angry. Looking at camera over his shoulder.
LYNCH: “I swore an oath.”
MAN: “Can you live with yourself if you do this? Will clinging to your oath help you sleep at night when Trump destroys this country?”
LYNCH: “I don’t know.” (beat) “Damn it. Damn you and her to hell.”
MAN: “Blame me, not her. The sins are mine. She came out of those eight years changed.”
LYNCH: “It’s not you who fucked up this time.”
MAN: “No. But look to intent. Focus on intent. She had no malign intent with this. Hell. You’ve used that email system. You know how frustrating it is.”
LYNCH: “What provision of that statute cuts out a space for intent to matter?”
MAN: “I’m not your counsel, and I’m not giving legal advice. Prosecutors have to pass on cases that at are hard to win. And this one will be a circus.”
CAMERA PULLS BACK, LYNCH LOOKS AT WINDOW, SEES HOW SHE’S CLOSED IN
MAN:.” You only got Petraeus because he outright lied to the FBI. She’s smart enough not to do that. I know she was prepared for that interview. You’ve read the transcript.”
LYNCH: “I have. And if I prosecute this, it’s…fuck what a mess.”
MAN: “And if you prosecute, win or lose, Trump takes the White House.”
MAN RAISES HAND INTO VIEW OF CAMERA, DOESN’T TOUCH, CONCILIATORY:
MAN: “Think of the world your grandchildren will live in if you do this. Sometimes the spirit of the law trumps the letter.”
LYNCH: “…you’re right. Fuck.”
LYNCH DRINKS WATER, WIPES FOREHEAD. MAKES DECISION
LYNCH: “Comey is going to hate this. He’s going to hate it with every fiber of his being.”
MAN: “He’s a good man. You’re not asking him to publicly compromise the principles that make him able to do his job.”
LYNCH: “Yes. I am. I’m taking a man who’s got an attack dog nature and telling him to heel.”
MAN: “No. You are asking him to say that absent intent, he doesn’t quite have a case. This happens in white collar cases all the time.”
CAMERA SLOWLY MOVES IN ON LYNCH, SHOOTING DOWN, MAKING HER LOOK SMALLER IN OVERSTUFFED SEAT.
LYNCH: “Those transcripts will come out, eventually. Congressional subpoenas can’t be dodged forever.”
MAN: “That’s our problem, not his. He can live with it. The Bureau will be clean, and so will he.”
LYNCH: “Comey’s not going to go easy on her.”
MAN: “So long as he doesn’t recommend prosecution.”
PREGNANT PAUSE: Close up on AG LYNCH face
MAN: “He’ll do what he has to. For the greater good.”
This is a Rorschach text.
If you’re on the HIllary Is Evil camp, that last line sounds sinister.
If you’re in the Anything To Stop Trump camp, that last line sounds is someone shielding a loyal underling in return for compromising their principles.
Turn up at your local polling place on November 8 to see the thrilling conclusion.
