Will The Rise of Conversational UIs Be The Downfall of Designers?

I’m extremely excited about the rise of conversational design. And I think it presents a paradigm shift in how we design and build services (not apps…). Designers will still be in high demand because of this new challenge.

Users are taking to these new chat interfaces. But I imagine what users will not want is to have “conversations” with 50 different bots. Especially when commands can have different meanings and outcomes from one app to the next. This is the challenge — designing one conversational UI to rule all. I suspect that a common language will need to be developed that works across all things. And when that happens, you get away from the current silo’d app experience and closer to a collection of connected services.

Designers will play a huge role in helping make this feel natural and responsive.
