A desire for romantic love isn’t something you suffer over until what you decide you want is romantic love from one specific person, even if they aren’t right for you. A desire for “success” isn’t something you suffer over until you decide that one, hyper-specific measure of accomplishment is what you’re going to base your worth on even if the likelihood of getting that one particular thing is slim and it doesn’t really say that much about you or your life in the grand scheme of it all.
The real joy of daily work is in what we have to give. We are not fulfilled by what we can seek to please us, but what we can build and offer. It is not fame, or money, or recognition that makes for a thoroughly meaningful life, it is how we put our gifts to use. It is how we give.
