Travel stories: Massage nightmare in Bangkok: #metoo?

If you’re not into happy endings, anything other than a foot massage, or a traditional Thai massage in Thailand is fraught with tension. Well, at least for me. You’ll need a post massage massage to relieve the tension. They do not follow western protocols of modesty here. I still can’t…

Travel saved my life

But what can a decent man speak of with most pleasure? Answer: Of himself. Well, so I will talk about myself. Source: Notes from the Underground by Fyodor Dostoyevsky I am a pathetic man. A once broken man. A man who once overflowed at the sight of a woman. The…

Uber stories: Salesmanship 101s

I had an opportunity to be driven somewhere yesterday for a few errands. My driver told me that he worked for General Electric (GE) in sales back in the day in Saudi Arabia. He said that he took Jack Welche’s wife out shopping during a visit by the President and CEO of GE, Jack Welch. He told me how casually she spent incredible amounts of money buying jewellery, and how his outings with her was the first time he saw an American Express black credit card.

Travel stories: chat with egyptian

Today, I had an interesting chat with a young Egyptian about religion. I told him that I believed in God, but not in any organized religion. This person, while muslim, and fasting held the same view. The person said that many Egyptians now believe in God but not religion. He said that many young people held the position that one could believe in God without believing in the prophet M’s role or in islam. That people had simply adopted the religious beliefs of their parents, but did not personally have a connection to the religion. I asked him how people express this new belief in Egypt. His response: “they keep quiet.”

Travel stories: travel in the middle east during Ramadan

FYI: one of the perks of travelling to an islamic country during ramadan is the fact that you can enjoy free breakfast and dinner every day for free. All around the city wealthy people set up tented kichens/restaurants where they offer free food. This was especially delicious in Dubai, but Egypt is no slouch. The place In which I had lunch appears to project soccer matches onto a screen during dinner and or breakfast. It’s all quite the outdoor celebration. Edible, but not Instagramable food.

Travel stories: riding a camel to the great pyramid of Giza.

I did not represent Canada well today. My camel was kinda lazy, requiring the guide to exert himself, pulling it’s bridle. He asked someone to toss him a broken broom handle. He then tossed it to me and told me to beat my camel on it’s legs to make it…

Beggars make more than minimum wage.

I was standing at the counter of a local bubble tea shop when an older looking street person hobbled into the restaurant. Taking up a space at the other end of the counter near the cash register, he deposited a handful of change onto the counter and began to carefully…
