Common Core Math is Not the Enemy
Brett Berry

Simple question 5x3 using addition.

Here is how I thought it through 5+5+5=15.

I was told this is WRONG with common core mathematics.

It is 3+ 3+ 3+ 3+ 3=15

Common core math is not the problem. The problem is limiting the concept of critical thinking in math. It is important to allow the child to come to their own understanding as long as the answer is RIGHT. This common core process, as it is expressed to me through children, is limiting creative thinking and critical thinking if you tell them there is ONLY ONE right answer. There is almost always more than one way to get to the answer and to limit that creativity is a disservice to the human and humanity.
