Social Media & The Way We Communicate

I have had the privilege of managing 70+ social media accounts including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Yelp over the last 5 years. Whether I am in my office, at my home or anywhere else, I always seem to have one eye on the road* and one eye on social media. As you could probably imagine, I don’t sleep very much.

Not only am I neck deep in the social media culture for my “day job”, I am also personally invested and fascinated with the way we communicate today and how it has evolved so drastically over the last couple of decades. Things have changed quite a bit from dial up internet and text messages.

The internet became available to us about 20 years ago with the release of Windows 95. Fast forward almost two decades later, we have an even better internet in our pocket because of our smart phones.

In 1993, IBM released Simon. Simon was a cellular phone that contained a calendar, address book, world clock, notepad, email client, the ability to send and receive faxes, and games. This was a game changer. This was the first smartphone.

With the introduction of the smartphone, came a word we are all familiar with today. . . . the word “APP.” Apple trademarked the phrase “There’s an app for that” in 2009 and in 2010, the American Dialect Society voted the word “APP” as the word of the year.

In 2003 & 2004, we saw the birth of Myspace and Facebook. Instagram came to the scene in 2010.

Today we live in the year 2016, the year of Snapchat, Periscope, Meerkat, Uber, Lyft, Peach, Extra Plate and more.

Social media and how we communicate has obviously changed the landscape of business, marketing and how we as human beings communicate with each other and I am happy to be a part of a team that recognizes this and are willing to invest into our growth on social media.
