I absolutely believe it’s possible. My own experience has shown me that it is. As a gay Latino who has tended to simply avoid hetero white folks because of the inevitable and often frustrating culture clash, I’m genuinely surprised to have found myself in Bernie Facebook groups chatting daily with funny and smart moms from the midwest sharing caucus blow-by-blow accounts, straight men from Massachusetts railing against the co-opting and perversion of social justice rhetoric by political adversaries, and tons of retired folks who spend hours every day phonebanking and sharing inspiring stories. Have I had to forgive clumsy conversation from people who lack an understanding of what could offend me? Yes, just as I hope I too have been forgiven for sometimes being too angry, too quick to judge. But I think it becomes easier to forgive when you have a clear sense that you are working together for something.
