To not acknowledge it is doing something very weird that I don’t want to partake in.
On being ugly

I completely agree. My hair started thinning and receding enough that I had to comb forward to make it look full. It became ridiculous, so I just buzzed all the hair off. You can still blatantly see the sparsely populated region, with a horseshoe border, along which the hair density drops like a cliff.

People ask me why I buzzed my hair, and I frankly admit to my drastically thinning hair (a bit abnormal for someone age 26). Without fail, they say how they don’t notice it at all.

YES YOU DO!

This is not me complaining or paranoia or some demented, vane insecurity. I just have stupid hair and I’m cool with it. But people telling me they don’t see the distinctly visible line wrapping across my scalp makes me completely uncomfortable. I get why they are doing it, but, as you said, it’s very weird and I refuse to partake in it, to the point where I insist that they acknowledge my thinned hair by forcing them to visually inspect my head, which I guess is also weird…
