Another interesting chat with another mentor/business consultant with 12+ years in the trenches in China, here’s my write up of his position of spending time and being selective about which startups to dedicate time to -

  1. has to be a start up that you REALLY believe in. It has a to be a hell yeah, for you to agree to accept an advisory role.
  2. Align your skills with the needs of the startup/ business you want to advise for. How can you really help, and will it make an impact, otherwise, whats the point?
  3. Once you’ve agreed on being an Advisor, ensure that you get everything in writing, including your renumeration (even if its equity)and your obligations no matter how detailed, its beneficial to be clear how much and exactly what you should contribute. This “FAST” document was recommended.
