Shells were the oldest form of money and now they are the newest

Today, the Shell Protocol is launching its first stablecoin liquidity pool at https://shellprotocol.io. Shell pools have five features worth emphasizing:

  1. Deep stablecoin liquidity
  2. Reserve weights
  3. Protections against a broken peg
  4. Dynamic fees
  5. Interoperability with aTokens and cTokens

These five features incorporate facets of several DeFi protocols: Curve, Balancer, mStable and Mooniswap. Like Curve, Shell can facilitate large stablecoin-to-stablecoin trades with minimal slippage. Like Balancer, Shell pools can have weights. …

Heavy weights are entering the arena. Facebook is coming in hot, but I’m still holding out for Amazon Coin.

It’s hard to exaggerate how bad the past 12 months have been for crypto markets. Bitcoin, the most resilient performer is down 80% and has yet to find a bottom. The superlatively large bubble of 2017 ended with a superlatively large crash. Frankly, I’m surprised that this crash has taken so long to play out. I guess Hodlers needed to see a lot of red before they finally woke up and smelled the roses.

It’s tempting to say that this downturn…

Dubbed the “Holy Grail” of cryptocurrency, the dominant stablecoin platform could become the most valuable institution in human history…but what if there is no winner?

Price stable cryptocurrencies, designed to mitigate the volatility of traditional crypto assets such as Bitcoin, seem to be all the rage these days. Stablecoin projects are mushrooming all over the place. The Stablecoin Index lists over 20 projects already deployed or in active development. Probably many more are to come.

Some of them are extremely well-funded and have powerful backers. For example, Circle’s stablecoin project, Centre, raised over $100 million and has the backing of…

Not a bad logo, at least

I like the idea of a cryptocurrency with monetary policy, but have the following misgivings:

tl;dr

(1) It is quite simple to game their algorithm

(2) Their “bonds” violate basic common sense

(3) Higher volatility results in less income for “shareholders”

Pre-amble

It was announced recently that Basis (aka Basecoin) closed a $133 million round of funding. That seems like a lot to me for a project without a working prototype, but by crypto standards, this is par for the course.

For those who don’t know, Basis is an “algorithmic central bank” that expands/contracts their currency supply in order to…

This may not be the financial paradigm shift investors are hoping for

Summary

  • Despite all the money pouring into apptokens, their properties as an investment vehicle are poorly understood
  • Ultimately, the value of apptokens must come from users of the tokens’ platform
  • According to economic analysis, an apptoken’s ability to capture value from users is proportional to how long users hold onto tokens before/after making transactions
  • Most likely, users will not be inclined to hold onto apptokens for very long, so the tokens will not capture much value from the platform for investors
  • Back of the envelope estimates predict that…

On November 8, 2016, America voted and the unthinkable happened: a reality TV star and professional Twitter troll was elected president. The fallout from Donald Trump’s presidency is already mounting as he appoints a white nationalist as his chief of strategy and places a rash of anti-LGBTQ bigots to his transition team. A second Trump presidency, a total of eight years in office, is anathema. Which is why we — people who believe in progress and equality — have to start acting now if we are serious about returning dignity to the Whitehouse.

The unfortunate failure of Hilary Clinton’s campaign…
