Interesting take on the trolley problem. I think many people would prefer to not take responsibility for the universe. We didn’t put the people on the track. We didn’t set the train in motion. Why did we have to get out of bed today and visit the railroad? Now we have to make a life and death decision. If you can’t avoid the circumstance, and you are utilitarian, you will save the 5 people. The reason this question is so hard is because we are taught that human life is infinitely valuable. When comparing infinite values, you find that they are all equal, regardless of the quantity of people involved. For this reason, you will never get past the regret of killing just the one innocent person, or the fact that you really should have slept in that morning and let fate or someone else decide the outcome.
