Zero-sum life
If we want to achieve something which exceed our current skill set, we have to pay something which is equivalent to what we want to achieve. This is true in terms of skills because it takes long time to be a professional in one filed. Some one says that it takes ten thousand hours. I am not sure if it exactly require ten thousand hours because I believe that theory does not consider density. Image skill is an area. If you have huge area, you are professional in that field. When you practice something, your area is increasing. I believe ten thousand hours is average. They assume people learn new skill with fixed rate. But if you are really focus, your learning late become high. You can acquire your skill less than ten thousand hours.
However, it is obvious to take long time. We equally have 24 hours per day. We have to take a lot of time to achieve something. Therefore we need to choose what we do. In other word, we need to throw away to preserve time enough to achieve the skill.
I throw away most of life to achieve the Ph.D. For instance, I give up to hang out with friends. I decided to do nothing which is related not related to CS.
