Lighthouse tour

To be fairly honest, the idea of Singapore having lighthouses never crossed my mind, until my aunt told me she signed the two of us up for a lighthouse tour. Clearly I was having a blonde moment, because what island doesn’t have lighthouses.

We went to visit two of Singapore’s 5 lighthouses (4 belong to Singapore and one doesn’t belong to them, but they are in charge of running it). The lighthouses lie on surrounding islands in the region and are normally not open to the public. This year though, the Marine and Port Authority and the Heritage Board ended up arranging a tour to the lighthouses for Singaporeans (and a few foreigners ☺).

We began our day by heading to the National Museum for 7:30am for registration. Yes, it was extremely early and I’m not sure I was fully awake, but it was totally worth it.

Here are some of the pictures from the tour…

As we headed out we were surrounded by tons of the shipping boats using the port of Singapore — which (I believe) is the second biggest port in the world behind Shanghai
The famous Singapore skyline
Singapore skyline again — you can see my favourite Supertrees! ❤
Hello pretty beach on an empty island — this just makes me want to own a boat and move there
First glimpse of lighthouse #1!
They even have a small museum for the tour! It’s in the old generator room which used to be used to power the lighthouse, but since they’ve moved to (I believe) solar power and kerosene they’ve been able to clear out the generator room for the museum.
The Singapore lighthouses!
Then we began the climb! Which isn’t very far if you compare this lighthouse to ones in Canada.
Can we all just admire how beautiful this island is? And only two people man the lighthouse, leaving the island pretty much inhabited all year

The next lighthouse! Sadly we didn’t get to disembark on the island due to time constraints. This lighthouse is unstaffed as well, but architecturally it’s gorgeous

The lighthouse tour was amazing and I loved every second of it! We were even provided with a lovely snack and ample time to tour the island and ask questions. These events organized by the Heritage Board are new, and I’m hoping to be able to participate in more during my time here! The weather on Saturday was also perfect, not too sunny and humid and no rain — what a miracle!
