Why Writing On Medium Scares Me

…And Why I’m Doing It Anyway

I’ve posted a couple things on Medium here and there, but I’ve never really started to write here. Actually, I’ve never really kept writing things consistently anywhere.

I’ve been thinking about really getting into writing on Medium for a while now, and I think it will be really fun. I’m not trying to do anything too serious. All I want to do is write, and Medium seems perfect for that. But, there are a few reasons why I’m a bit skeptical.

Medium isn’t self-hosted.

If you Google “Medium vs WordPress,” you’re going to find a lot of people saying that you should really have a self-hosted blog on WordPress in addition to writing on Medium. If you have a WordPress blog, you have complete control. I’ve had self-hosted blogs before. I enjoyed customizing WordPress, finding new themes, messing around with plugins, and all that good stuff. But that’s not what I want to do on Medium. Like I said, I just want to write.

Medium could disappear.

If I’m doing all my writing on Medium, then I’m not in the best situation if Medium shuts down. If I had a chance to export all my posts, that’s good, but I’d have to figure out what to do with them, how to organize them, where to host them, you get the point. If I didn’t get a chance to export my posts, then they are gone. That would suck. But, Medium has been around for a while, and it doesn’t look like they are going anywhere anytime soon. Plus, there’s no way that Medium is going to shut down without giving us enough time to export all our posts.

Medium has a big audience.

When posting on Medium, there’s a chance that I could actually get quite a few reads. Now, this is a good thing for obvious reasons, but could it also be bad? If a post I write gets a lot of reads, a lot of people could hate it. That’s pretty scary, isn’t it? I’m pretty new to writing, so that’s kind of a big deal. But, having the chance for a bigger audience will probably force me to write better. Maybe.

So, I’ll be writing on Medium. I don’t know when I’ll make another post, but you should follow me if you want to find out. Most people would advertise their website here. Maybe they wrote a book or something. My website isn’t ready. I didn’t write a book. I have nothing for you. Goodbye.
