To be honest, I liked Beyonce way more when she was with Destiny’s Child. I find her newer stuff a little dull (although, admittedly, I haven’t listened much past the occasional hits and didn’t watch Lemonade, so take that with a grain of salt).
TLC was sick, though, and like the author writes, it actually felt like they were friends who grew up together rather than co-workers. As for “No Scrubs,” I’m guessing the reason it’s popular is because it’s timeless and catchy, even if it’s not nearly as good as Waterfalls. Anyone can get the basic idea of “No Scrubs” (or, “No Pigeons”, for that matter) by listening to the chorus, but you have to actually pay attention to “Waterfalls.” Similarly, say, Eminem’s best songs aren’t the ones that hit MTV (although “Lose Yourself” is pretty high on both popularity and quality).
Also, obviously, Destiny’s Child has the advantage of Beyonce still being a significant musical force. If T-Boz was playing the Super Bowl as a solo artist, I imagine they’d be getting more streams (although, sadly, if anyone was going to break out it would have probably been Left-eye — RIP)
I’d be curious to throw Salt N Pepa in here as well.
