Yeah, I don’t know if he’s worth it, but if you’re Minnesota, it makes sense. He’s may not earn the contract, but he’s going to be good. Unless they want to let him go as a free agent, and start all over again, hoping for another #1 pick caliber player to fall into their laps, they might as well go with what they’ve got.
It kind of reminds of the column in The Ringer about how the championship or bust mentality isn’t necessarily the best. Say you’re Minnesota, and for argument’s sake, you decide that your core of Wiggins, Towns, and Butler is never going to win a championship. But, you think they’re good enough to field a competitive team for the next 4–7 years, make a conference finals or two, and have a puncher’s chance at a title one year.
Is that worth it for Minnesota — a team that hasn’t made the playoffs in 13 years? Five straight playoff appearances, averaging 49–53 wins a season, and a couple deep playoff runs? Honestly, I’d rather that then let Wiggins walk and try to land yourself the next Anthony Davis.
