Very interesting to hear some professional commentary on this. You do a nice job viewing the seeming disaster that is Japanese web design within a cultural lens (which is absolutely necessary). This topic, on a more general level, is something I believe many companies are going to have to approach with more sensitivity as international web businesses become the norm. The i18n process is a lot more than mere translation of words, but also the translation (and tuning) of culture.
