Products inspired in nature are more attractive, unique, lean and well thought, either it is an aesthetics or functional inspiration.

The solutions, shapes and textures present in nature are endless, this is the first round-up of a collection featuring nature inspired product design. Follow me for more.

01. Butterfly Stool by Sori Yanagi (1954)

Butterfly Stool by Sori Yanagi (1954)

As soon as you start digging into Japanese design this stool pops-up as a representative icon.

Behind this design is more than natural inspiration, it reflects the sensibilities of the post world war II era and american post-war design. Nevertheless the beauty and elegance of the shape is nature inspired.

02. Coral Chair

Coral Chair by Aisslinger (1954)

Coral Chair is designed by the studio Aisslinger and its a part of their coral lamps, mesh vases and seating modules edition for the Made in Berlin 09 exhibition space.

03. Tree Lamp by Aisslinger

Tree lamp by Aisslinger

Also from Aisslinger, Tree Lamp is a product from 2008. As stated in their website.

The tree light family is designed as a linear, sculptural standing and suspension lighting concept with its aesthetical origin in the abstraction of shapes in nature.

04. Algue, Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec (2004)

A modular system inspired by algae. This space divider form their own finely branching ornament which, thanks to thicker eyelet-like areas at the ends of the module's total of nineteen points, can also be clipped together at as many points as required to form complex meshes.

05. Grasshopper-Stapler

This example shows that boring every-day products can be more valuable.

Staplers are simple and easy to re-design products that can adopt many shapes. In this case the designer chose a grasshopper, but any animal, insect, bird, plant can be the inspiration.

06. Bloom by Patrick Jouin

Lighting design and natural forms have a long and fruitful history.

In this already iconic lamp designed in 2010 each petal of the shade is hinged at the base, producing a nuanced spectrum of light, from direct to diffuse.

It is actuated manually and the user can adjust it.

07. Fractal Table by by Platform Wertel Oberfell

This table is based on the fractal growth pattern found in nature, specifically in the trees.

Since the nineties architects tried to include complex geometries based on natural shapes and mathematical principles found in nature, but, the technology wasn't ready. Nowadays cheap 3D printing and 3D CAD software has allowed many designers around the world fill this gap.

Another example of nature inspired design.

08. Philips Bio Light

As one of the most innovative companies in lighting, Philips created this green light that works with glowing bioluminescent bacteria.

09. Andrea Air Purifier

Andrea Air Purifier by Mathieu Lehanneur

This air purifier by Mathieu Lehanneur uses a plant or combination of plants to reduce air pollutants in a room.

It requires water and electricity to operate since it does not use filters.

10. Vitalis Bottle

Designed by Logoplaste Innovation Lab for Vitalis, this water bottle inspired by the spiral growth of some trees such as wild pine, gives resistance to the bottle using less plastic.

It saves 250 tons of material each year.
