I agree — part of the problem is that the WCAG accessibility guideline predate both non-system font use and the ability to vary font-weight directly. Measuring contrast needs updating to include these factors.

Lea Verou’s contrast ratio tool is handy, but only shows the WCAG measure. Even so, a surprising number of sites fail this.
