CS 371p Fall 2019: Week 10

What did you do this past week?
This past week I began work on the Darwin project and began studying for a few exams that I have this coming week. My first impression of the Darwin project is that it is relatively straight forward after coming up with a good design that abides by object-oriented principals. For the weekend I traveled with the band for a performance in San Antonio on Saturday, and spent a large part of the evening and Sunday studying. I was definitely very thankful for the extra hour afforded by daylight-savings time.
What’s in your way?
I think getting enough sleep and eating well have been challenges for me lately. It is certainly easy to resort to fast food for meals and to stay up late and get less sleep than you should. I’ve definitely had to rely on coffee to get me through the day a little too often. I aim to eat out less going forward and improve my diet and sleep habits.
What will you do next week?
Next week is shaping up to be very busy, with an Advanced Computer Architecture on Monday, Chemistry on Thursday and Darwin due Thursday night as well. On top of that I have further Longhorn band commitments to attend and class registration on Monday. All in all, a very stressful week coming up unfortunately. I will have to do my best to stay on top of everything to ensure the best outcome.
What was your experience of the vector implementation?
It was interesting exploring all the challenges involved with actually implementing such a commonly used STL container. There were definitely a lot of aspects that I didn’t even consider, especially with regards to construction and copying.
What’s your pick-of-the-week or tip-of-the-week?
My tip of the week is making time for yourself and those you care about. It is easy to lose track of personal connections in the day-to-day work of school, and its even easier to put yourself in bad mental state. It can definitely feel like school demands every free moment from you, but I think that it is important for you to take some time for yourself when necessary. Likewise, keeping up with your friends and loved ones makes day-to-day life so much better. Don’t go it alone, use your support system!
