On Sunday 30 July at the Abbotsford Convent, Kew School of Dance held it’s annual Awards Ceremony. Presented by Jane Andrewartha, Director Movement and Dance Education Centre, and Tanja Blackwell, Bendigo Bank Kew | Kew East, our Awards Ceremony is about recognising the hard work and dedication of those students who made the commitment in 2017 to participate in dance exams and take an opportunity to perform a component of that work for our larger community. After all, dancers do class work to develop the skills necessary for performing.

Assessments are an important part of our training program at the Kew School of Dance and very valuable experience for those children who participate. Each stage of work develops logically and provides the foundation for the next stage of study. Every year we reflect and evaluate the exam process and question if the work involved for students and teachers justified the outcomes. Every year we conclude the same thing; exams are a very valuable goal for students and teachers to work towards and without them we would not see the same level of development and improvement in our students.

There is real and lasting value in the confidence gained by working through the process and putting yourself out there on exam day. The understanding gained by setting a goal, making a commitment and following through is an important life lesson as well as an important part of developing physical dance technique. The level of commitment to regular attendance and focus during class is reflected in the results. The nature of dance requires regular practice to maintain and develop skills, if you don’t use it, you lose the ability to do it!

Exams are a major event in our annual calendar and they would not be possible without the amazing efforts or our teaching staff, administrative staff, and our assistant dance teachers who also contribute their time to support the classes they assist. I would like to take this opportunity to thank them for their care and passion for dance teaching and for their year long support.

At Kew School of Dance our school motto is Cognita Per Chorum, Learning Through Dance, and our Awards Ceremony was a wonderful example of this. In addition to all 2017 exam students, Kew School of Dance would like to congratulate those students who were awarded LMDS Merit Awards based on their 2016 exam results, as well as Angelique Leo, who was awarded the prestigious 2016 Laurel Martyn Award and Iris Elgar & Angelique Leo on jointly receiving the Movementality Scholarship for $500 each toward dance pilates and physio.

Our next big event is the senior concert Arabian Nights on Saturday 2 September. We look forward to seeing you there!
