Let’s chat about everyone’s favorite topic: the always-changing beast of SEO. Whether you’re creating your first-ever landing page or your 10 millionth one, we cannot emphasize enough the importance of a landing page design that implements SEO best practices.

Lucky for you, we’ve created a quick checklist (and handy image below) that will help optimize your landing page design so that search engine robots can find and understand who your content is made for — with the ultimate goal of ranking high among the SERPs (search engine results pages).

Meta Title

This is the title you give to your webpage. It is displayed by the browser at the top of your computer screen to inform the reader what page they are on. Meta titles are also read by search engines, so it’s important to use a strong title in the eyes of the search robots, that also makes sense to human visitors to your website. Focus on your headlines. Great headlines are proven to boost click rates, readership and conversions.

Meta Description

This is the short description of the page that you see underneath the title in SERPs. Write concise copy here to give the user a reason to click on your page, by writing a preview of what they will find on your landing page.

H1 & H2 Tags

In HTML, title tags are arranged from H1 to H6. Your landing page design should contain one H1 tag, which is your main headline. Any subheads that you use should be an H2 tag. These tags prioritize your content and tell Google, “These are the most important words on my landing page.”

SEO-Friendly Content

Now we’re going to provide you with a checklist within a checklist. Here’s what you should keep in mind when writing SEO-optimized content for your landing page:

  1. Conduct keyword research and use your findings in your web copy and headlines.
  2. Ensure that your content is mobile-friendly.
  3. Use compelling images throughout the text and then optimize your images using proper file names, file sizes, and alt text.
  4. Aim for easy readability with the use of proper formatting throughout your landing page.
  5. Most importantly, put yourself in the reader’s shoes and create high quality, original and genuine content.

Bulleted Lists

Lists (like the one above and below) make the reading process easier for your audience, increasing the time in which people stay on your landing page. They provide a way for you to enhance important copy in a clear and concise format, without overwhelming your reader.

Internal Links

Creating an internal linking structure will provide SEO and user experience value to your landing page. Here are some of the benefits:

  • Open up pathways to additional landing pages that may not be as accessible to the search robots.
  • Prioritize your webpages based on keywords used in the link’s URL and anchor text.
  • Improve user navigation by offering additional ways for the user to interact with your site.
  • Pass “link juice” between web pages, which can increase your SEO rankings.
  • Organize the architecture of your site to communicate to search engines what content is most important.

Contact Form

Many landing pages are created for lead capture purposes, which means you’ll want to include a way for users to submit their contact information. This is one of the easiest methods of collecting leads and allows your visitors to get in touch with you. You have several options here, opting for embedding the form onto your page, include it in the page header, or creating a pop-up light-box.

Contact Information

This one is simple. Would you be convinced by a landing page that doesn’t include any contact info? This is an easy method for building trust early on and allowing your visitors to feel as though they can easily contact you, if necessary.
