The Rhône wine region, one of the most ancient wine-growing areas, stretches along the Rhône River to the Mediterranean Sea in the southern part of France. Rhone Wine Often divided between its northern and southern climes, the Rhône Valley is associated with both the purity of Syrah in the cooler northern appellations of Côte Rôtie and Hermitage. In warmer, more southerly, latitudes Syrah is a blending component (often with Grenache and Mourvèdre) in Châteauneuf-du-Pape and the Côtes du Rhône. Other Northern Rhone appellations allow the blending of red and white wine grapes as well. In the south, it is much more complicated. A total of 13 grape varieties are allowed by AOC laws, Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre, Picpoul, Terret Noir, Counoise, Muscardin, Vaccarese, Picardan, Cinsault, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Red Grenache and Picpoul.
