I don’t doubt that the total is in the multiple billions, as you say. But you also say that some of that money, perhaps quite a bit, is being effectively used for reasonable purposes.

What I was really trying to come to was if the problem is the AMOUNT of money that’s being wasted, or if the problem is the WAY the money is being wasted. Apparently it’s the latter. Single-digit billions of dollars is a rounding error on a 3.5 trillion dollar budget. However, as a conservative, what I dislike even more than waste is the idea that money is being siphoned off to advance political causes with which I disagree. I don't think there’s any doubt that if there’s unaccounted funds, they’re ending up to some extent in PR that advances liberal notions, or in the coffers of liberal politicians, who then promise to defend those expenditures and increase them if they can.
