Yes but the “they started it” game never ends does it?

This is actually a bit different, as it’s not a “Uncle Sam hit me first” situation.

In this case, what “Uncle Sam did” (along with Winston) was not to “hit” the Middle East first, but set up a condition (via the drawing of borders) which guaranteed that the Middle East would be in chaos, and would have to rely on Sam (or Winston) in order to maintain control over their populations, who were mixed by ethnicity, tribe, and religion.

Well, this PO’ed those populations, so although some DID decide to rely on Sam or Winston (and France, for that matter), others decided to rely on Nikita and then Leonid instead.

So, the best laid plans of Sam and Winston went awry, and the era of proxy wars in the M.E. started, with the ultimate result being what we’ve seen for the last few decades.

Now, these old-country Muslim populations have generational memories; they’re still pissed about the Crusades. So, yes, they view the fact that they live in relative squalor as the direct result of the Big Powers continually interfering in their affairs, propping up dictators who get real rich at their people’s expense, etc.

They’re not wrong. And every time there’s a suggestion that the “borders problem” get fixed (Joe Biden suggested the sectioning of Iraq, with the north becoming Kurdish, the central region Sunni, and the southern region Shia) it gets roundly booed.
