I simply do not understand why most of the regressive left doesn’t get this.

You know, when I was sitting in the airport on election night watching the (brilliant!) real time meters on the New York Times election page fluctuating, I was also watching Nate Cohn’s (the Times election statistical guru) twitter feed

At one point, perhaps around 9:30 ET, he tweeted to the effect of “the white working class has started voting like an identity group”.

So, yes. It was inevitable that the white working class would suddenly become part of identity politics, at some point; and of course, each identity group has it’s small minority of fruitcakes which take the ideology to the insane limits (e.g., the neoNazis).

For the liberal, the bright shiny lining of that article is that the author explains that there is another way forward for the left, and that is the egalitarianism of the enlightenment.

But to embrace that, there is a lot of nonsense they’d have to learn to eschew. Probably going to take awhile.
