To many of us in the gun community, the last thing one wants when one is in a crisis is to have the heavy and impersonal hand of government come down on us. I think it is far more important to use government programs to support private efforts to help people in a way that seems helpful rather than adversarial. The NSSF has been working on a way to empower “buddies” to reach out and secure the firearms of folks who need temporary help. We need to make sure that laws don’t run at right angles to these efforts. A recent Everytown bill that was stalled in the NM Legislature would have been one of those “right angle” bills. Sadly, getting the two sides together to avoid working at cross purposes to each other is not easy.
