The scene from A Long Walk to Water(ALWtW), that I will use is chapter 1 with an emphasis on pages 5–7.

The connection to history comes in the form of the brief history on the war in Sudan between the government in the north and the rebels in the south. The other connection is the human connection, these pages will allow the students to see how it affected students living in Sudan.

The strategy that I would employ to find out what the students know is conservation round-table.

The strategy takes the class and breaks them up into groups of four. From there each group has a piece of paper that has been folded four quadrants. In the top left corner of each quadrant will be a word or phrase. The words are Sudan, Sudan Civil War, Refugee camp, the Lost Boys. Now in the groups of four, the students will discuss what they know about each word/topic. After ten minutes of discussion, as a class the words/phrases will be discussed. By doing this the teacher can gain an understanding of what the students know about the words/topics. With the varying degrees of understanding, it will make the students want to know more and see if what they knew was similar. This is when they would read the first chapter of ALWtW.
