The New Celebrities

Eight of the 10 most popular and influential celebrities among teenagers got their start in social media. They’re professional video game players and YouTube stars, not Hollywood actresses or pop musicians.

These digital stars will get a boost this week when YouTube announces a funding round for some of its top creators, according to re/code. YouTube is expected to introduce a paywall and subscriptions for some content, too.

How are the Millennials and Generation Z kids who either follow these stars or are these stars different from previous generations of celebrities and fans? They have a healthy entrepreneurial spirit and more than just about anything else they want to make a difference. They also place a premium on authenticity and believe they may have to make their own careers.

And as on-demand natives, they’re also part of a change in the kind of job you get when you’re in between jobs, searching for your calling or chasing Internet fame. We hear Amazon is hiring.
