I’d like to share a list of tools that have really made a difference in my work as a freelance designer. Some of these have been in my toolkit for ages, while others come recommended by friends who’ve found them incredibly useful. Hopefully, you’ll find something here that can make your freelance journey a bit smoother.

Finances

Keeping a tight ship financially is key to freelancing success. Here’s what can help:

  • QuickBooks: Keeps your business finances clear and tax-ready.
  • Toggl Track: Its reports go beyond time tracking to help you understand your finances better.

Project Management

Organizing projects ensures you deliver on time and keeps clients happy. These tools are great for that:

  • Trello: Its visual boards make managing tasks straightforward and satisfying.
  • Asana: Ideal for collaborating with teams, keeping everyone aligned and moving forward.
  • Miro: A go-to for collaborative brainstorming and design planning.
  • Notion: Centralizes your planning and project documentation, making life a lot easier. I use it literally for everything.

Time Management

Mastering your hours is crucial to handle all your projects efficiently. These suggestions can help:

  • Pomodoro Technique: Breaks your work into productive intervals, helping maintain focus.
  • Calendly: Takes the hassle out of scheduling meetings with clients.

Something else

  • Adobe Creative Cloud is constantly expanding its app offerings, including Adobe Express and new features across the board, it’s worth keeping an eye on Adobe for the latest in design tools and innovation.
  • ChatGPT for creative and administrative tasks. Beyond generating content ideas or drafting engaging cover letters, ChatGPT can assist with creating briefs or even providing inspiration for design projects.
  • Grammarly for error-free writing. Essential for ensuring your communications and documents are clear, concise, and professionally presented.

This roundup represents a blend of tools that have been invaluable to me and others recommended by fellow freelancers. It’s far from exhaustive, but my hope is that you discover something here that seamlessly integrates into your workflow, perhaps making your freelance journey a bit smoother.

The landscape of tools and apps is always evolving, especially in the creative and freelance world. Keeping up with the latest can give us an edge, not just in efficiency but in the quality of our work and satisfaction of our clients. So, if there’s a tool you swear by that I haven’t mentioned, or if you’ve got tips on something new and groundbreaking, I’d genuinely love to hear about it.

Catch you soon,

Jane Kott
