The battery of the new iPhone 14 is getting bad, what is the matter?

The battery capacity of the ‘Pro’ and ‘Pro Max’ models of the iPhone 14 has dropped a lot in just a few months.

Battery problem in iPhone 14

Well-known names in the tech world work in different countries and institutions, but nowadays they are all saying the same thing — iPhone 14’s bad battery health (iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max battery issue).

It hasn’t even been a year, and the battery health has dropped by 80 percent in the latest iPhone models, especially the Pro and Pro Max versions.

Along with tech experts, many common users have also shared their problems on social media.

A brand-new phone, yet the battery is having issues. What’s the matter? Let’s try to understand.

The iPhone 14’s Struggling Battery Health

Generally, the battery life of iPhones is considered to be long-lasting. Many users even buy iPhones for this reason, using the same phone for 5–5 years.

However, the story of the iPhone 14 series launched last year is different. In less than a year, the battery has repeatedly fallen below 80 percent.

Take a look at the tweet from ZONEofTECH founder Daniel:

The battery life of my iPhone 14 Pro has significantly decreased. I charged the phone at 8 in the morning, and by 12 noon, the battery had dropped to 20%. After charging the phone back up to 80%, the battery dropped again to 20% by 4 o’clock.

Daniel has also shared a screenshot of his phone, which shows that his battery capacity has dropped to 88 percent.

Sam Kohl, another expert in Apple product usage and news, has also expressed his displeasure with the iPhone’s battery.

Many other people are also expressing their dissatisfaction with the battery health of the Pro and Pro Max models of the iPhone on social media, and it didn’t start suddenly.

Many more users had reported this issue as early as June. According to them, instead of having a 100 percent charge, the new phone only has 90–95 percent battery. Handsets were replaced after complaints from such users.

Not everyone is upset, though. One user (mentioned below) is impressed with the Pro Max, stating that it’s performing better than any of the other iPhones they’ve had — with the 12 Pro being the worst they’ve encountered.

There is no official statement from Apple regarding this issue yet. However, the rapid decline in battery capacity of the new phone is surprising.

Smartphones use Lithium-Ion (Li-ion) batteries, which come with many advantages. They can handle a large amount of current, require lower maintenance, and have a self-discharge cycle of only 1.5% per month.

This cycle also occurs when the battery is fully depleted — for example, discharging it to zero and then charging it to 100 percent.

Yes, leaving the charger connected all the time can also cause damage.

Many users have mentioned that they only charge the phone up to 80 percent, which is considered good for battery health.

Moreover, Apple has included the ‘Optimized Battery Charging’ feature in the iPhone, which stops charging when the phone reaches 80 percent.

Typical Lifespan of an Apple Battery: How Long Does It Hold Up?

According to Apple, the battery health should be at 80 percent after 500 charging cycles.

One cycle refers to going from full discharge to full charge. The math here isn’t straightforward either.

For example, if you charge the iPhone to 100 percent, then charge it to 100 percent again when it’s at 50 percent, one cycle won’t be completed.

On the second day, when you charge from 50 to 100 percent, a cycle will occur. If you charge from zero to 100 percent every day, then there will be one cycle count.

According to this, even if you complete a cycle every day, it takes around 16–17 months.

However, not everyone completes a cycle every day, so it typically takes around 2 years to reach 500 cycles.

This pattern has been observed with iPhones thus far. After two years, the battery health drops to 80 percent.

It’s important to note that battery health remains stable in older models like the iPhone 13 and 12.

Whether this is a software or hardware issue will be determined in the future.

By the way, Apple’s new iPhone 15 series is set to arrive in less than a month.

Therefore, the battery health issue should not negatively impact the sales of the new phone.
