PURE — ‘No Secrets’

What a statement this is from PURE.
Purity Mkhize, previously of Durban band Fruits and Veggies, is now rolling solo and has just released the Kyle Lewis-directed video for ‘No Secrets’.
If you’re still following my ramblings, I’d recommend you scroll down to the bottom of the page and hit play on the video right away. Come back up and rejoin if you like…or just go with your own interpretation.
Personally, I’m blown away by what her and Kyle Lewis have created here. Naked as the day she was born, the video commences with a brief oration from Pure (as she’s affectionately known) on the pressures of time and how you’re generally better off just doing your thing, backing yourself, and not stressing too much about it.
The almost 5 minute production is a visual embodiment of self-confidence and -belief. That she’s chosen to appear largely nude is a significant statement of body positivity, and the entwinement of bodies of all skin tones, shapes, and genders sends a powerful message about inclusion and acceptance.
While this could exist as a standalone visual, that it’s equally powerful sonically is madness. FKA Twigs is an obvious influence and reference — the sensual vocals, confidently unhurried tempo, and captivating atmosphere. Lyrically the song echoes the visuals, “I don’t care what anyone else has to say”.
Can’t wait to hear and see what else is to come from her.
