What is C#?

C# (pronounced “C-sharp”) is a modern, object-oriented programming language developed by Microsoft.

Key Features of C#:

  1. Object-Oriented: C# supports the principles of object-oriented programming (OOP), which includes encapsulation, inheritance, and polymorphism. This allows for the creation of modular and maintainable code.
  2. Type-Safe: C# ensures that the operations performed on variables are type-checked at compile time, reducing runtime errors and enhancing security.
  3. Rich Standard Library: The language provides a comprehensive standard library that simplifies tasks such as file operations, data manipulation, and network communication.
  4. Component-Oriented: C# supports component-oriented programming, which allows developers to build software as a collection of interchangeable components.

What is .NET?

.NET (pronounced “dot net”) is a free, cross-platform, open-source developer platform created by Microsoft. It provides a wide range of tools and libraries that developers can use to build different types of applications.

Key Components of .NET:

  1. Common Language Runtime (CLR): The CLR is the execution engine for .NET applications. It provides services such as memory management, exception handling, and garbage collection.
  2. Framework Class Library (FCL): A vast collection of reusable classes, interfaces, and value types that provide functionality for various tasks, from file I/O to web services.
  3. Language Interoperability: .NET supports multiple programming languages, including C#, F#, and Visual Basic, allowing developers to choose the best language for their specific needs.
  4. Cross-Platform Development: With .NET Core, developers can build applications that run on Windows, Linux, and macOS, making it a versatile platform for modern application development.

How C# and .NET Work Together

C# and .NET are designed to work seamlessly together. When you write a C# program, you’re writing code that will be executed by the .NET runtime. The C# compiler converts your code into Intermediate Language (IL), which is then compiled into native code by the CLR at runtime. This process allows C# code to run efficiently on any platform supported by .NET.

Consider a simple C# application that reads a file and prints its contents to the console:
