Stalinism and Maoism share similar authoritarian power structures with fascist regimes. Stalinist Russia and Putin’s Russia have the common characteristic of imprisoning and murdering the opposition, despite one being “capitalist” and one being “communist.”

Socialism is about people having democratic control over the economy. Which is why many of us distinguish between authoritarian regimes who claim to be socialist, and socialist ideas and institutions with the term “democratic socialism.”
