Wall-e was a documentary
As a marketer I have to contradict you, somewhat. There are some increasingly clear differences in traits between categories. And while accurate representation is a must have for any writer in pre-truth world, it’s more of a old fashion quick nowadays. People are increasingly more tribal, so generalizations become increasingly accurate. It’s a life influences art, art influences life type of thing.
On the one hand, descriptive writing that is accurate can have some really absurd characters while those same works influence absurdists and post modernists to exaggerate, pander to their audiences base convictions and increasing their radicalism in the process.
So in practice in the era of post-truth, news and face news are both infotainment. The validity of the information is both ontologically and functionally irrelevant because the cultural function of the writing is not to inform, so any valid nuances and portrayals are just old fashioned positivist quirks that you can do with or without. A matter of personal style and pedigree more than anything else.
The modern equivalent of “you are what your job is”, is “you are what your media consumption is”. Functionally we spend hours of our lives in mini bubbles of ideology and confirmation bias. This creates more homogeneity than even the most demanding of high pressure labor tribes. (cooks, miners, firefighters).
ANd the sad part is we have the technology to track that, and instead of raising a red flag, people like Mark Z who has access to more metadata than anyone else on the planet has the gall to rhetorically ask if maybe social media creates more discord than unifies in a public address that anyone that uses his target marketing service can read. Social leaders know this, the whole tech sector that contributes to medium.com , knows this. But they gloss over it because they like their own bubbles.
